When shopping for the cleanest candles we see a lot of big words thrown around. At Pinky Swear we pride ourselves in being phthalate-free, but what does this really mean? Who are these silly little phthalates we are keeping out of our candles? Let’s get sciency.

Phthalates are a group of chemicals that are commonly used in a wide range of consumer products, such as plastics, personal care products, and building materials. They are known to have adverse effects on human health, including reproductive and developmental problems, as well as an increased risk of certain diseases.

Phthalates are used as plasticizers, which help make plastics more flexible and durable. They are also used in personal care products, such as lotions, shampoos, and perfumes, to help the product adhere to the skin and improve its texture. However, phthalates can be released from these products and can be absorbed through the skin, ingested, or inhaled, leading to potential health risks.

One of the most significant concerns associated with phthalate exposure is its effect on the reproductive system. Phthalates are known to disrupt the endocrine system, which is responsible for regulating hormone production and activity. This disruption can lead to reproductive problems, such as reduced fertility, early onset of puberty, and birth defects.

Studies have also linked phthalates to an increased risk of certain types of cancer, including breast cancer and prostate cancer. Phthalates have also been found to affect the immune system, making people more susceptible to infections and other illnesses.

Furthermore, phthalate exposure has been linked to developmental problems, such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Studies have shown that exposure to phthalates during fetal development and early childhood can have long-lasting effects on cognitive and behavioural development.

Phthalates have been banned or restricted in some countries, such as the European Union, but they are still widely used in many other parts of the world. It is challenging to completely avoid phthalate exposure, as they are present in many common products, but there are ways to reduce exposure, such as choosing products labeled as phthalate-free, using natural and organic products, and avoiding plastic products with recycling codes 3, 6, and 7, which are more likely to contain phthalates.

Phthalates are a group of chemicals commonly used in many consumer products that can have negative effects on human health. While it is challenging to completely avoid exposure, taking steps to reduce exposure can help protect our health and well-being. It is essential to be informed about the products we use and their potential risks, and to choose safer alternatives whenever possible. We make sure that our candles are safe to use, especially around children and pets. Choosing a scented candle should be safe and fun and at Pinky Swear you can always count on us to use toxin-free fragrances!
